The Chiren underground gas storage facility is filled to 100% of its technical storage capacity, Bulgartransgaz said on Monday. According to the requirements of EU Regulation 2017/1938 on measures to ensure security of gas supply, no later than November 1 of each year, gas storage facilities in EU countries must reach at least 90% of their capacity.

In 2024, for the second year in a row, Bulgaria meets the target ahead of schedule.

Bulgaria's only gas storage facility is essential for the energy security of Bulgaria and the countries of the South East Europe region. The level of filling achieved contributes to ensuring the security of natural gas supply for the coming heating season.

A total of 12 companies - 7 Bulgarian and 5 international - store natural gas in Chiren.
