The Sea of Rhythms International Folklore Festival kicked off for the fourteenth year in a row in the northeastern town of Balchik on Friday with a parade of all participants. The event was opened by the festival’s artistic director, Galina Gavrailova.
More than 1,200 people are scheduled to perform over the next few days. The competitive section features entrants from Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, and the Bulgarian cities of Dobrich, Yambol, Stara Zagora, Plovdiv, Pleven, Sofia, and Vratsa.
A special guest at the event was Morocco’s Ambassador to Bulgaria, Zakia El Midaoui, who showcased traditional Moroccan women's clothing to the audience.
The Sea of Rhythms festival is the first competitive event in Bulgaria that offers international ensembles and individual performers a platform to perform Bulgarian folklore.
