Artists and festivals in Bulgaria enjoy greater independence than their counterparts in Scotland, jazz musician Steve Hamilton said, speaking to media on Tuesday. Hamilton is part of the band Noise Linguistix, which is set to open the fifth night of the Dr Emil Iliev International Jazz Festival.

"I feel there are more artistic projects here, more opportunities and festivals. People create more original music," Hamilton said. He contrasted the situation in his native Scotland, where much of music production is funded, with the music scene in Bulgaria, where artists keep creating regardless of sponsorship.

Noise Linguistix, the opening act of the fifth evening, features Mihail Ivanov on double bass, Alexander Logozarov on guitar, Hamilton on keyboards, and Kristijan Krajnčan on drums and cello.

BTA is a media partner for the festival, which concludes on August 7.
