The Bulgarian Navy is celebrating its 145th anniversary. The annual celebrations start traditionally in the city of Ruse where the Navy of the Principality of Bulgaria was established on August 12, 1879.

On Monday, the anniversary was marked with a military ritual and floral tributes paid at the Monument to the Sailor.

The Navy Commander, Rear Commander Kiril Mihaylov, said at the formal event: "Generations of sailors have served in the Navy. All of them have contributed with their service to the Navy's development, enhancing its capabilities to this day. Unfortunately, the war in Ukraine has faced us with new trials, none of us expected that in peacetime we would have to defuse mines and constantly monitor the maritime spaces for a weapon that many people considered obsolete. But this is our daily life, our job and our duty - to protect the sovereignty of the motherland, to protect Bulgaria and to ensure safe navigation in its waters so that Bulgaria can work, live and develop."

Addressing those gathered, Ruse Mayor Pencho Milkov said: "The protection of the motherland is everyone's duty, not just of people in uniform. Ruse remembers and treats you with great respect and gratitude."

The event was attended by officials, representatives of municipal and state institutions, serving personnel and reservists, MPs, priests and members of the public. The Navy's representative brass band, which is marking its 140th anniversary this year, gave a concert.
