Retail turnover in Bulgaria in food, beverages and tobacco products has been gaining momentum since the beginning of 2024 on an annual basis, according to National Statistical Institute (NSI) data published on Friday. Аn increase by 10.3% was registered in February, compared to the same month of 2023. A check on the NSI website shows that the annual growth in turnover in the same group was 6.3% in January.

Retail trade in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods continued to decline.

In February, the turnover in ‘Retail trade, except motor vehicles and motorcycles’ at constant prices increased by 0.9% compared to the previous month. The calendar-adjusted turnover rose by 3.2% compared to the same month in 2023.

Monthly changes 

In February, an increase was observed in the food, beverages and tobacco, and in the non-food products (except fuel) - by 2.8% and 1.4%, respectively. A downgrade by 0.7% was registered in the automotive fuel.

In ‘Retail sale of non-food products (except fuel)’ more significant growth was reported in ‘Retail sale of textiles, clothing, and footwear and leather goods’ - by 7.3%. A reduction was noted in ‘Retail sale of computers, peripheral units and software; telecommunications equipment’ - by 4.3%.

Annual changes

In February, an annual increase in turnover was registеred in the food, beverages and tobacco - by 10.3%, and in the non-food products (except fuel) - by 3.7%, while in the automotive fuel in specialized stores, a drop by 14.0% was noted.

In ‘Retail sale of non-food products (except fuel)’ an increase was observed in ‘Dispensing chemist; retail sale of medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles’ - by 14.8%, in ‘Retail sale via mail, order houses or via Internet’ - by 8.9%, in ‘Other retail sales with non-specialized stores’ - by 8.3% and in the ‘Retail sale of audio and video equipment; hardware, paints and glass; electrical household appliances’ - by 4.9%.

Major decline was reported in ‘Retail sale of textiles, clothing, and footwear and leather goods’ - by 10.8%
