The first Bulgarian female choir in New York, Yasna Voices, will give a concert at Barnard College on March 30, the choir said in a Facebook post. The concert will start at 7:30 p.m. at Held Auditorium, Bernard Hall.
Yasna Voices' previous concert at Barnard College was in February 2020.
Yasna Voices was established in 2002 by Vlada Tomova, vocalist, song writer and organizer of master classes in Bulgarian folk singing. The choir performs Bulgarian as well as Eastern European music.
Barnard College was established in 1889 by a group of New York City women, led by young student activist Annie Nathan Meyer. They assembled a committee to support their vision and, after two years of petitioning, convinced the Columbia University Board of Trustees to create an affiliated college, which they named after Columbia's recently deceased president, Frederick A.P. Barnard. He had argued unsuccessfully for the admission of women to Columbia University.
