The Socialists have moved a bill to allow a postponement of the liberalization of the energy market for households. "We are submitting a law to postpone the liberalization of the market for households for the price of electricity by one year - instead of July 1 this year, it will come into force on July 1, 2025," BSP for Bulgaria Floor Leader Korneliya Ninova told journalists here on Thursday.
In October 2023, the Bulgarian Parliament amended the Energy Act to remove the regulation of electricity prices for household users as of the beginning of 2026. As of January 1, 2026, households will have to go to the free market to buy their electricity and pay market prices.
Ninova said that all forecasts made by experts show that the entry of families to the free market will lead to an increase in the price of electricity by up to 20%. She said there were hundreds of thousands of families who could not afford this new price hit.
