Bulgarian athlete Karlos Nasar came second in European Weightlifting Federation's (EWF) Best Weightlifter of the Year awards presented Sunday during the opening ceremony of the European Weightlifting Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The 19-year-old Nasar, who won his second European title in the men's 89kg category in Sofia on Saturday, was only beaten in the rankings by Lasha Talakhadze (+109 kg) from Georgia.
In 2023, the Georgian phenom grabbed his seventh consecutive European title at the 2023 European Weightlifting Championships in Yerevan and then added to his tally a seventh world title in Riyadh. Talakhadze has a chance to win an eighth European gold on Tuesday if he wins on the final day of the heavyweight championships in Sofia.
Latvia's Ritvars Suharevs (-73 kg) came third in the male rankings while Mihaela Valentina Cambei from Romania (-49 kg) was been voted the best female weightlifter for 2023. Second place went to Kamila Konotop (-59 kg) of Ukraine and third to Emily Campbell (+87 kg) of Great Britain.
