The project Anxiety by Ukrainian artist Zhanna Kadyrova will be presented at the Czech Centre in Sofia between February 20 and 28. The project includes two exhibitions, Anxiety and Palianytsia, both of which premiered in 2022, and two documentary films. Kadyrova will be at the opening, which will involve a musical performance by saxophonist Yaroslav Kmytko, the Czech Centre said.
The project Anxiety is dedicated to all Ukrainians who have left their country or still live there. The sense of threat to one's own life and the lives of one's relatives has become constant and pervasive since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the organizers said.
The works for the project were created in the first three months of the war, when Kadyrova and another Kyiv-based artist, Denis Ruban, lived in a village close to the border with Hungary. The works were inspired by the conditions in the mountain village, the natural surroundings and the traditional lifestyle.
Zhanna Kadyrova was born in 1981 in Brovary, Kyiv Province, where she currently lives and works. She is a member of the REP (Revolution Experimental Space) group. During the last few years she has focused on site-specific projects, including an outdoor installation in the Semmering Mountains (Austria), a spread intervention and permanent sculpture in the village of Tolfa (Italy) and a sculptural project for the Shanghai Jing'an International Sculpture Project (JISP) in Shanghai (China). Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at Kunstforum Wien (Austria), Eretz Istael Museum in Tel Aviv, and Palais Tokyo (Centre Pompidou) in Paris.
