A national initiative on the environmental health of urban rivers to be announced soon, Environment and Waters Minister Julian Popov told Nova TV on Sunday. Earlier in January, Popov spoke about his idea of repopulating the Perlovska River in Sofia.

The Minister reported that the Perlovska River is dirty. Checks have been made near waste water discharges along the river, he noted, adding that it is possible that there may be discharges with no connection to Sofia’s sewerage system.

The most natural thing is to have fish in the water and to produce electricity of that water, Popov believes. Of course, the Perlovska River cannot replace the coal-fired power plants in the Maritsa Iztok energy complex, but microgeneration is a very important sector in power generation, he stressed.
