site.btaNorth Macedonia's PM: Process for Implementing Constitutional Changes Already Started, Country's Accession to EU Inevitable
The changes in the constitution are a clearly defined commitment of North Macedonia, the process has started and will be completed successfully, North Macedonia will inevitably become a member of the European Union (EU), North Macedonia’s Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski pointed out Wednesday before the start of the EU-Western Balkans Summit.
Kovachevski recalled the draft conclusions to be discussed by the EU foreign and European affairs ministers, according to which the European Council is ready to convene an intergovernmental conference "without further delays or additional political decision as soon as North Macedonia fulfils its commitment to complete the constitutional amendments". He noted that the European and anti-European blocs in North Macedonia are clearly emerging in the current situation.
The EU-Western Balkans Summit is hosted by European Council President Charles Michel.
Since Tuesday, the media in North Macedonia have been publishing separate passages from the draft conclusions that the EU will discuss at its annual meeting. One of the main questions being asked is whether North Macedonia, which has not implemented the constitutional changes that are a condition for opening the negotiations for its accession in the EU, will be separated from Albania, since the two countries have so far been discussed together on the road to the EU. Kovachevski did not give a concrete answer to the question whether he expected the two countries to be separated and wished all EU candidate countries success.
