Parliament Adopts Procedure for Election of Two Constitutional Court Judges

Parliament opened a procedure for the election of two judges from the parliamentary quota to for the Constitutional Court. The deadline for making nominations is January 11, 2024. Proposed by Hristo Ivanov and Kiril Petkov of Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB), Boyko Borissov of GERB-UDF and Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) floor leader Delyan Peevski, the draft rules went through in the Constitutional Affairs Committee and reached the plenary as an emergency item on the agenda.

The rules of procedure were backed by CC-DB, GERB-UDF and MRF. Vazrazhdane, There Is Such a People and the Socialists voted against. 

The Constitutional Court has had two vacancies for two years now.

During the debate, Vazrazhdane accused the government of attempting to replace the composition of the Constitutional Court in view of an upcoming decision on a proposed referendum against a euro changeover.

The candidates will be given a hearing in Parliament which will be streamed live on the website of the National Assembly.  If none of the candidates gets the required number of votes, a new procedure will start.
