In a realistic demographic scenario, the population of Bulgaria will shrink to 4.972 million by 2075, the National Statistical Institute said Tuesday as it put out an updated population forecast until 2090.

The forecast offers a realistic, worst-case and best-case scenarios.

The realistic scenario complies with the EU standards for demographic and socio-economic development of the Member States. In it, of the 4.9 million population, those aged 65 and over will be 25.5% and the age dependency ratio is 69.1 per 100. That means that there are 60 dependent individuals aged 65 or over and 15 or younger per 100 of active age.
