Talks are underway to stage the play Peer Gynt at Henrik Ibsen's home in Oslo, actor and director of Sofia Theatre, Iriney Konstantinov, told BTA. The selection for the events at Ibsen's house has not yet started, however, Konstantinov is hopeful that his theatre will be invited to perform there.

The Norwegian writer's home turned museum was among the places the Bulgarian troupe visited during its tour with Peer Gynt in Oslo in early September. The venue does host a theatre, however, no plays had been staged there, as it was not subsidized by Norway's Ministry of Culture.

The Bulgarian Embassy in Oslo promised to assist to have Sofia Theatre stage Peer Gynt in the Norwegian city of Bodo, which will be the European Capital of Culture, in 2024, BTA Director General Kiril Valchev said at a press conference here on Wednesday.

Valchev commented a part of the play, when Peer Gynt is asked whether he is a Norwegian. His response is that he is Norwegian by birth and a citizen of the universe at heart. Valchev said that Bulgarians should get familiar with Peer Gynt's story, as they can also become citizens of the universe.

Konstantinov spoke about his troupe's tour in Norway, describing it not as a professional commitment but rather as "an adventure, an emotion, madness".

Theatre critic Kamelia Nikolova said that Peer Gynt is staged relatively rarely both in Bulgaria and worldwide, as it was one of Ibsen's early philosophical plays. It was meant primarily for reading. She added: "It takes a lot of courage on the one hand from any theatre and on the other hand it takes a very strong and expressive interpretive directorial concept".

Actress Eleonora Ivanova described the staging of Peer Gynt as the most valuable, the most interesting and exciting experiences in her career. She noted that the audiences in Norway seemed to be "hungry for art". Her colleague, Alexander Tonev, the play grew and matured throughout the tour in Bulgaria and Norway.

The tour Oslo was made possible under the Peer Gynt Travels project, which also includes performances in small towns in Bulgaria.

Valchev presented Konstantinov with a medal commemorating BTA's 125th anniversary. The BTA Director General said: "For 125 years BTA has had this great responsibility - to represent Bulgaria, to tell about Bulgaria beyond the self-sufficiency of Bulgarians. And to help them learn about the world, so that they see that there is something more around them".
