The Sofia District Prosecutor's Office brought to criminal responsibility a Latvian citizen who illegally assisted foreigners to reside in the country, the prosecutor's office said on Thursday.

On the evening of August 22 in Sofia, the accused D.K. in order to acquire for himself a property benefit, assisted six citizens of Syria to reside in the country in violation of the law, transporting them in a car.

Pre-trial proceedings for criminal offence have been initiated in the case.

Taking into account the possibility that D.K. might abscond, as he had given a summoning address other than the one at which he had been found by the Ministry of the Interior officers and which he had rented, he was detained for up to 72 hours by order of the supervising prosecutor.

A request is to be submitted to the court for consideration of a remand in custody against the accused.
