The situation is under control, Social Minister Ivanka Shalapatova said in Berkovitsa on Saturday after torrential rains hit the country. She visited the settlement, where heavy rains have fallen since the beginning of June and floods have occurred several times.

"We are in full mobilisation not only in the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, but also in the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Defence, the Prime Minister, the regional government and local authorities," Shalapatova added.

"During my visit today, I will discuss with colleagues whether there is a need for additional measures to help the victims. We are not only talking about material support with money, one-off aid, water, food and preparations, but about mental and emotional support for people who are devastated after the disaster," the minister added.

"We want people to see that they are not alone and that there is a state and people beside them to help them," she added.

Minister Shalapatova added that at the request of Berkovitsa Municipality, funding has already been allocated to employ unemployed people to help in the affected households with clearing up, food shopping and other assistance.

"We have set up an organization to process applications for one-off assistance submitted by people as quickly as possible, to examine and approve them as quickly as possible and by the end of June they will receive the planned funds, which are up to BGN 1,512," Shalapatova said.

The Social Minister visited the most affected village of Lilyache later in the day and promised financial aid for the victims, Vratsa Municipality reported.
