Speaking at the welcoming ceremony of the Bulgarian naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421) here on Tuesday, caretaker Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said that the crew were burdened with huge public expectations from day one for a historical event for Bulgaria: sending a naval research vessel to the Southern Hemisphere and her return. There was daily risk for the crew over the past months. On Antarctica, the crew also helped colleagues from other countries and proved that they succeed in every endeavor, Stoyanov said.

RSV 421 docked in Varna on Tuesday morning after a 127-day voyage to the Bulgarian base on Livingston Island and back. The ship is owned by a consortium consisting of the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy in Varna, the St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia, and the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute.

Stoyanov also said that the mission ended successfully thanks to the efforts of many people and institutions. The Navy acquired, repaired, and equipped the ship and prepared the crew, and the Naval Academy provided medical care for the crew. "We should not forget the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), which 24 hours a day informed us about the ship's location as well as the state of the crew and the researchers," the Defence Minister noted.

"I am proud that today, the Defence Ministry managed to contribute to the implementation of the Bulgarian scientific programme. Despite the difficulties, you defended the name of the Bulgarian State, the Navy, and the Naval Academy," he added.

Stoyanov conferred plaques on the head of the Antarctic expedition, Prof. Hristo Pimpirev, and on RSV 421's Commanding Officer, Captain Nikolay Danailov.
