The Health Ministry has sent a letter to the European Commission suggesting that the amounts of the COVID-19 vaccines which the ministry receives should match the needs of the population. EU member states should have the right to get just as much as they need, the ministry's press office said on Thursday.

Sometimes the amounts of the vaccines far exceed the needs of the countries, according to the letter. Such is the case with a contract between the European Commission and pharmaceuticals supplier Pfizer concerning the purchase of anti-pandemic vaccines in 2022-2023. Under the contract, Bulgaria should receive another 2,710,904 vaccine doses by the end of 2022 and over 7 million in 2023.

Bulgaria counts on open dialogue with the European Commission and COVID-19 vaccine suppliers when determining the amounts of the vaccines. The Health Ministry wants to ensure that the country is able to maintain a wide range of COVID-19 vaccines in reasonable quantities.

In its letter to the European Commission, the ministry makes proposals about revising the Commission's contract with Pfizer.
