Bulgaria Ranked 69th
in Corruption Perceptions
Index

Sofia, December 3 (BTA) - Bulgaria is ranked 69th among 175
countries in the 2014 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI)
compiled by watchdog Transparency International (TI) , said
Kalin Slavov of Transparency International Bulgaria at
BTA-hosted news conference on Wednesday.

The Corruption Perceptions Index ranks countries and territories
based on how corrupt their public sector is perceived to be. A
country or territory's score indicates the perceived level of
public sector corruption on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100
(very clean). A country or territory's rank indicates its
position relative to the other countries and territories in the
index.

Bulgaria has scored 43 points for the CPI, two points up as from
last year, the report shows. This country continues to be at
the bottom of this ranking along with Italy, Greece and Romania.
The average CPI for the EU member-countries is 64 points.

The results show an overall improvement of the economic
environment at European level and this tendency covers Bulgaria
as well, Slavov commented. Along with this, a decline has been
observed in regards to the supremacy of the law and the
democratic development as corruption is pointed out as the main
reason for this tendency. The results of the last decade show
that there is stagnation in the fight against corruption. The
frequent and inconsistent changes in the legal framework cannot
give an adequate response to the problem. These conclusions are
confirmed by other comparative studies showing that, in spite of
the efforts made in certain sectors, there is a lack of an
overall vision and consistency in the fight against corruption,
TP Bulgaria said.

Among the European countries, Denmark has the highest score of
92 points, followed by Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands and
Luxembourg. In the world ranking, Denmark tops the list again,
followed by New Zealand and Finland. North Korea and Somalia are
at the bottom.

The CPI is based on experts' opinions of public sector
corruption.

In the regional ranking for Southeast Europe, Bulgaria ranks
fourth, as the best performer in this list is Croatia.

Among the new EU member states, Estonia is the leader with a
score of 69 points. /PK/TK/
