Latvia Supports Bulgaria, Romania  Accession to Schengen

Sofia, February 4 (BTA) - Latvia supports the accession of
Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen, Latvian Ambassador to Romania
and Bulgaria, Ilgvars Klava, said Wednesday. He was presenting
the priorities of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the
European Union before the National Assembly's Foreign Policy and
European Affairs and European Funds Control committees.

The priorities of the Latvian Presidency are: competitive,
digital and engaged Europe, Klava said.

Around 200 events will be held in Latvia including high-level
political meetings during the Latvian Presidency. One of the
main events will be the Eastern Partnership Summit and its
related meetings (Business Forum, Civil Society Forum, Media
Freedom Conference and Youth Forum, etc.). There will also be 10
informal meetings of EU Ministers and the Asia-Europe Meeting
(ASEM) of Ministers for Education.

There are plans to organise a Digital Agenda Assembly, a
European Conference on Standardisation, a Social Partners Forum,
an eHealth Week and other important meetings.

National Assembly Chair Tsetska Tsacheva, who opened the
meeting, said she is impressed by the priorities and stressed on
three items important for Bulgaria - Latvia's support for this
country's accession to the Schengen area, the fact that the
Latvian Presidency is supporting the establishment of an
European Energy Union, as well as the focus on improving EU
competitiveness as a key to achieve economic growth and
employment.
