Record-high Number of Waterfowl Observed in  Lake Pomorie

Sofia, October 23 (BTA) - A record-high number of waterfowl that use Lake Pomorie as a feeding and resting place has been established during a routine observation mission of experts, sources from the Green Balkans Federation of Nature-conservation NGOs said.

More than 32,000 birds were observed, of whom more than 28,000 waterfowl. The most numerous - 21,000, were the Eurasian coots (Fulica atra), the common teal (Anas crecca) - more than 1,500, the mute swan (Cygnus olor) - more than 800, the common pochard (Aythya ferina) - 2,000, the grey heron (Ardea cinerea) and the pygmy cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmeus).

Rare species were also observed, such as the globally threatened ferruginous pochard (Aythya nyroca) and the osprey (Pandion haliaetus). Migration was observed of common buzzards (Buteo buteo), common wood pigeons (Columba palumbus), and black storks (Ciconia nigra). The lake continues to provide shelter to about 50 sandwich terns (Sterna sandvicensis).
