President Plevneliev: It is Time for Politicians to Fill the Word "Reform" with Content

Sofia, January 1 (BTA) - It is time for politicians to fill the word "reform" with content. The people want justice and real results, President Rosen Plevneliev said in his New Year's address for the coming New Year.

Compromises in politics sometimes seem difficult, at other times redundant, but they make sense if they are aimed at the major goal: for the people to live better and the country to be more modern, socially responsible and fair, the Head of State said. "We have waited for too long and now we are more impatient. We were lied to frequently and that is why we are more suspicious, but also wiser. We know that with patience and persistence we will build the Bulgaria our forefathers dreamed of and the Bulgaria we want to leave to our children," Plevneliev said. Politicians today have to respond to impatience with determination, to suspicion with honesty, and behind-the-scene actions with morals. There is no longer place to put off the changes and half-way measures in either Bulgarian justice, or in health care, education or energy, the President said.

Bulgaria's democracy is not perfect, it does not always function perfectly, but it is democracy that makes us strong, free, humane, Plevneliev said. The democratic institutions serving the people are a symbol of a successful state, he added. Bulgaria has to become integrated with modern, democratic Europe, but it should also remember the covenant of its forefathers. The Bulgaria 2020 National programme should be implemented and Bulgarians should soon unite around a plant for the country's development until 2030, the Head of State said.

Plevneliev also called for improvement of democracy and the introduction of order in the state, ranging from success for the enterprising to young people remaining in the country.

"Democracy cannot be installed from without, riches cannot be donated. Democracy is upheld every day and by every one," the President said. Success does not come easily or immediately and riches are achieved by honest labour and good education, he added.

"Today Bulgarian citizens, regardless of their religious affiliation overcome the difficulties of daily life together. They share both holidays and the vicissitudes of fortune, guarding their values and building their common home," Plevneliev said, wishing all Bulgarians peace, love and prosperity.
