site.btaOver a Quarter of Vegetable Market Scales Found to Be Faulty

Sofia, August 28 (BTA) - Over a quarter of the scales used at fruit and vegetable markets in Bulgaria are faulty. This has been established in checks held by the State Agency for Metrological and Technical Supervision at town markets, wholesale markets and temporary points of sale across the country.

The inspectors were joined by police officers.

They checked 392 market stands and 424 scales. 123 scales - or 29 per cent - were found to be non-compliant with the legal requirements. 90 of the faulty scales were not designed for commercial use and the remaining 33 faulty scales have not had the required precision check.

The inspectors drew up 111 statements of administrative violation. The imposed fines are expected to exceed 10,000 leva.

The majority of checks were prompted by complaints for specific markets or seasonal points of sale.
