Sofia, May 24 (BTA) - The Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slav Letters was celebrated across the country on Thursday.

Speaking at a ceremony outside the National Library in Sofia, President Rumen Radev said: "If we want our children to grow up in a land of knowledge and education, we must show zero tolerance towards ignorance. Learning how to write is the first step in fighting ignorance."

Vice President Iliana Iotova visited Veliki Preslav, the medieval Bulgarian capital which was home to a major literary school in the 10th century. Greeting the local residents at a ceremony, Iotova said: "Our alphabet and books gave birth to Bulgaria, they created the Bulgarian nation."

In an initiative called "We Write in the Cyrillic Script," young Socialists in Sofia, Blagoevgrad, Plovdiv and Varna handed to passers-by scrolls of poems by great Bulgarian writers.

In the northern city of Pleven, thousands of people watched a Guinness World Record bid in which 65 authentic Bulgarian horo dances were performed in 1 hour and 18 minutes.
