site.btaBiggest Water Project of Current Programme Period Launched near Pleven

Pleven, North Central Bulgaria, July 31 (BTA) - Deputy Environment and Water Minister Krassimir Zhekov Monday participated in the groundbreaking ceremony of pipe and sewage networks and a renovated wastewater treatment plant, which is part of the large Pleven-Dolna Mitropoliya integrated water cycle.

Addressing the gathering at the launch of construction works, Zhekov underscored that the project is one of excessive importance and aims to improve the quality of life of the people, towards the sustainable development of the municipalities of Pleven, Dolna Mitropoliya, Yassen and Boukovluk. He said that 75 km of a new pipeline network will be built, 85 km of sewage network, pump stations and a completely rehabilitated modern waste water treatment plant which has been totally outdated for nearly 30 years.

The facility will correspond completely to European conditions and environmental legislation, Zhekov said. This project is an example of good partnership between local authorities, state and European institutions, he added.

This is the largest project in the Water Sector in the new programme period with an investment totaling 117,150,300 leva. The grant is nearly 88 million leva and there is co-funding from both the state and the municipalities.
