Ramallah, March 22 (BTA spec. corr. Lora Metanova) - Emerging from a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas here on Thursday, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said that a long-term and sustainable solution to the Middle East conflict can be found only if based on the principle of two independent states living in peace and understanding. Radev said that Bulgaria has a clear position and is an important partner of Palestine in the formulation of positions in the United Nations and the European Union.

"Without playing the role of an intermediary, I conveyed to President Abbas the wishes of Israeli President Reuben Rivlin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about constructive and peaceful relations. In this difficult situation, emotions are not the best advisor. We hope that the conflict will be solved on the basis of peaceful bilateral negotiations," Radev said.

He said that Bulgaria and Palestine have a common foe - global terrorism. "We praise highly the cooperation between our security services and will work to develop it in the future," Radev said.

The Bulgarian head of State said that the meeting reviewed the bilateral relations and mapped out measures how to expand them further. He invited Abbas to pay a visit to Bulgaria.

Radev reminded that more than 5,000 Palestinians have received university degrees in Bulgaria and said that this good cooperation in education should continue. In Radev's words, there exists a solid legal basis for cooperation in various areas: science, education, tourism, farming. He said that there is much to be desired in respect of the trade and economic cooperation.

Abbas said that he highly praises the big support from the EU for the Palestinian people in championing its institutions. He said that Palestine is ready to take part in negotiations but will not accept solutions that are outside the international legitimacy.

Abbas said that in respect of the bilateral relations, the meeting stressed the importance of convening the bilateral commission this year. He too noted the hundreds of Palestinians who studied in Bulgaria and serve as a bridge for the cooperation between the two friendly people.
