The most visible effect of the EU's Cohesion Policy for regional development is infrastructure, said Rasvan Zamfir from the Regional Office Calarasi of the INTERREG VI-A Romania-Bulgaria Programme 2021-2027, at the closing conference of BTA's Europe in the Balkans: A Common Future project in the Bulgarian seaside resort of Albena on Saturday.
Zamfir emphasized the importance of infrastructure for the development of regions and communication between communities on both sides of the border. "Even before the EU membership of Bulgaria and Romania, the pre-accession funds of the European Union had a tangible impact on the region, as they provided large investment in infrastructure development," he said.
Zamfir noted the importance of two new border crossings between Bulgaria and Romania, which opened in 2018. "People use these crossing points, they are very busy, especially in the summer, when tourists from Romania visit the Bulgarian Black Sea coast," he said.
