The 10th edition of the professional competition on detecting hidden water leaks is held in Plovdiv on Thursday. The competition is organized by the Bulgarian Water Association, in partnership with the Union of Water Supply and Sewerage Operators in Bulgaria.
Twelve teams from water and sanitation companies throughout the country take part in the competition, said Ivan Ivanov, Chair of the Bulgarian Water Association. The track on which the competition is held is pre-surveyed, and its location is announced to each team immediately before the competition. At the end, the top three teams will be awarded with a cup, medals and cash prize.
The opening of the event was attended by Plovdiv Regional Governor Iliya Zyumbilev, who wished the teams success and pointed out that the work of plumbing specialists is extremely important.
Some 60% of drinking water in Bulgaria is lost before it reaches customers due to substandard supply systems, according to data of the Bulgarian Water Association. According to data presented by Irena Georgieva, Executive Director of Bulgarian Water and Sewerage Holding, more than BGN 15 billion are needed to upgrade Bulgaria's overall infrastructure to meet modern European standards.
