Nearly 70 children study at the Bulgarian Sunday School St. St. Cyril and Methodius in Istanbul, and this year 17 first-graders cross its threshold. The official start of the new school year was given on Saturday by Minister of Tourism Evtim Miloshev and Minister of Education and Science Galin Tsokov, their ministries said in a press release.
The school teaches children and students from pre-school group to 6th grade. It is attached to the Consulate General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Istanbul and bears the name of the first Bulgarian school, which opened in 1857 in Constantinople and existed for 116 years.
The two ministers presented the school with tablets and a multimedia projector for interactive lessons and presentations. The Ministry of Education also provided a number of school supplies and books for the school's learning activities, the Tourism Ministry donated encyclopaedias for the school library, and the Ministry of Sports provided supplies for PE lessons.
The Ministry of Education and Science supports organizationally, methodologically and financially two Bulgarian Sunday Schools in Turkiye, at the diplomatic missions in Istanbul and Adrianople, where in total more than 120 children are taught. They study Bulgarian language, as well as history and geography, organized as training courses. Many of the children are also involved in additional activities - music, folklore and fine arts. The school in Istanbul is housed in the Bulgarian Exarchate building of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church Foundation.
