Bessarabian Bulgarian Ivan Gechev from the Bolhrad district was awarded an Order for Courage, Third Class, posthumously by a decree of Ukraine's President, the Bolhrad District Military Administration said on Friday. The distinction was conferred on his father by Administration Head Mikhailo Sharafanenko.

Forty-year-old Ivan Gechev volunteered to join the Ukrainian army in the summer of 2022. He served as a first category inspector of the border service, mortars’ first group chief.

Gechev was killed on November 15, 2023, in a tank shelling in Luhansk region. He was buried in his native village of Mirnopolye.
