The role of the media was discussed in the panel "Media: Ethics and Etiquette" at the second Bulgaria Across Five Oceans career forum at Inter Expo Center in Sofia on Saturday. The event is organized by the Bulgaria Wants You platform. Journalist Marina Tsekova from Nova TV moderated the discussion.

Asked about negative news in the media, Dobrina Cheshmedzhieva, host of "Referendum" on Bulgarian National Television, said she does not believe media deliberately try to portray Bulgaria as a problematic country, but stressed that it is their role to report issues. She noted that media content follows the rhythm of real life, which includes both serious problems and positive events, citing examples such as Dara’s Eurovision success and the Giro d’Italia cycling race. Cheshmedzhieva concluded that the journalist’s role is to ensure that different points of view are heard.

24 Chasa Managing Editor Viktor Ivanov emphasized that for 35 years the newspaper's slogan has been that news is as it is, and argued that reporting reflects what happens in Bulgaria. He added that the outlet includes sections highlighting worthy deeds by Bulgarians and top-performing students. Ivanov stated that media do not prefer bad news, but that things happen that shake society, and stressed that journalism is based on facts, which should be reflected on once published.

Entrepreneur and Managing Partner at Xplora Bulgaria Georgi Malchev noted that in his 30 years in marketing he has seen far more positive energy than is often assumed, because there are many good news stories as well.

Bozhidar Rusev, News and Current Affairs Director at Darik Radio, pointed out that while bad news is still news, journalists are often focused on problems because that is what they deal with on a daily basis.

The event again brings together Bulgarians from the country and abroad, leading companies, visionaries and opinion leaders to present real opportunities for building a career and a life in Bulgaria, the platform told BTA earlier.

BTA is hosting its own booth at the career forum for the second year running. This year, BTA will spotlight BTA School, its internship and career development unit.

The media partners of Bulgaria Across Five Oceans are Nova Broadcasting Group, Darik Radio and BTA.
