Krasimir Dunev, Olympic vault silver medallist (1996) and Bulgarian Gymnastics Federation President was elected to the Council of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) during its 85th Congress in Doha. The renowned gymnast entered the governing body with the second-largest support after receiving 27 votes.
Apart from Dunev, four other Bulgarians joined the governing structures of the International Gymnastics Federation. Nikolina Hristova was elected President of the Acrobatic Gymnastics Technical Committee. Three-time world champion Maria Petrova remained Vice President of the Technical Committee of Rhythmic Gymnastics, while the Secretary General of the Bulgarian Trampoline Federation Mariela Stoycheva and international judge Desislava Bogusheva defended their seats as members of the Technical Committees of Trampoline Gymnastics Technical Committee and Aerobic Gymnastics Technical Committee.
"I am extremely happy about this incredible success. I think this is the most successful congress for Bulgaria so far. This shows that the whole world respects us and appreciates us as a force in gymnastics, and this is really a reason for joy," commented Krasimir Dunev.
"I hope in the next four years there will be big changes in gymnastics. This is Morinari Watanabe's last term as president. He has great ideas and I hope he will implement them. I, as part of the Council, will also put forward some ideas and I hope so that gymnastics goes forward and upwards. I also hope to help the development of Bulgarian gymnastics because we will be making the rules and that will be a big plus for us. I am sorry that Yordan Yovchev did not run for the Parkour Technical Committee. If he did, he would have certainly found a place in it," Dunev added.
