Bulgaria's national men's team defeated Scotland 3-1, while the national women's team lost 1.5-2.5 points to Uzbekistan in the fourth round of the Chess Olympiad in Budapest.

The success over Scotland, which was the third for the team led by Grand Master Kiril Georgiev, came after victories on the first and second boards. The Riga-born German GM Arkady Naidich scored his first point as a Bulgarian national after winning on board one with the black pieces against Andrew Greet. On board two Martin Petrov defeated Hamish Olson with the white pieces. The other two Bulgarian grandmasters, Momchil Petkov and Grigor Grigorov, drew with Frederick Waldhausen Gordon and Ian Gurley respectively for the 3-1 success.

With the win, the Bulgarian team now has 6 match points.

The ladies had an even match of three draws against Uzbekistan. On the second board with the white pieces Nurgyul Salimova shared the point with Umida Omonova, on the third board with the black pieces Viktoria Radeva did the same with Marjona Malikova, and on the fourth board Gergana Peycheva and Nodira Nidarjanova also failed to beat each other. The advantage for Uzbekistan came from Afruza Khamdamova's victory on board one with the white pieces over Antoaneta Stefanova.

The defeat, which was the first since the beginning of the tournament, left the Bulgarians with 6 match points.
