Bulgaria's highest ranked female tennis player Viktoriya Tomova reached the second round of the Australian Open by winning against American Kayla Day 6-4, 6-2 at Melbourne Park on Monday. The victory marks a first main draw win at the Australian Open for the 28-year-old, and her fourth career main draw victory at a Slam after Wimbledon 2018, 2022 and 2023.
Tomova will play next Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the No. 19 seed, who beat Australian Taylah Preston 6-2, 6-2.
Tomova is 7 places up in the live rankings with 957 points to be the new world No. 70 which is also her career high. Bulgaria's No. 2 player, Gergana Topalova, is ranked No. 247.
