Representatives of the Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) and the National Revenue Agency (NRA) held an information meeting in Sozopol on Tuesday, part of the National Information Campaign for the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria.
During the meeting, basic principles and technical details of the process of switching from leva to euro, scheduled for January 1, 2026, were explained. The representatives of the institutions emphasized that prices in retail outlets must be indicated both in leva and euro, using the official fixed exchange rate. It was pointed out that all available bank accounts and electronic funds will be automatically converted into euro at the fixed rate, without the need for any action on the part of consumers.
From January 1, 2026, all payments will be able to be made in both leva and euro during January, with change returned in euro. From February 1, 2026, the leva will be withdrawn from circulation as a means of payment. Citizens will be able to exchange leva for euro without fees within a period of six months in banks, post offices and other financial institutions.
In response to questions from citizens, the experts from the Consumer Protection Commission specified that an unjustified increase in prices in connection with the introduction of the euro is unacceptable and called on businesses to be transparent, use the same font and size when displaying prices, and avoid abuse.
It was indicated that the Commission for the Protection of Competition, the Bulgarian National Bank and municipal administrations will also exercise control over the process.
