Bulgaria is among the leading exporters of herbs both in Europe and in the world, said Minister of Agriculture and Food Georgi Tahov during the official opening ceremony of the International Tea Day 2025, which was held in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, the line ministry said.

Minister Tahov stressed Bulgaria’s significant potential in the sector of herbs and medicinal plants, noting that in recent years about 15,000 tonnes of herbs have been collected and processed in Bulgaria, of which nearly 90% are exported. Over 200 species are collected in the country, and are widely used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries, and active trade covers over 20 main species. "Mursal tea, linden, rosehip, chamomile, lemon balm and lavender are among the most sought-after Bulgarian herbs on the international market. Our country has significant potential for the further development and increase in the production and export of various types of herbal tea," he added.

During the event, the Bulgarian Minister of Agriculture expressed his gratitude to the Chinese hosts for the warm welcome and stressed the importance of cultural exchange and economic partnership between Bulgaria and China in the field of the tea industry. "We are convinced that there is untapped potential for the development of bilateral trade in tea and herbs, which must be developed in the interest of consumers and producers on both sides," Minister Tahov said.

Minister Georgi Tahov is visiting China from May 19 to 23.
