The share of renewables in transport in the European Union has reached 10.8% at EU level, an increase of 1.2 percentage points compared to 2022, when it was 9.6%, Eurostat data show. In Bulgaria, the share of renewables in transport in 2023 was 8.1% (2.7 percentage points below the EU average), up 0.4 percentage points from 2022. Bulgaria ranks 17th in the EU on this indicator.

Sweden is the country in the EU with the highest share of renewables in transport and the only country to have already achieved the 2030 target of 33.7% renewables. In contrast, Croatia has the lowest share (0.9%).

The largest increase in the use of renewable energy in transport between 2022 and 2023 was recorded in Sweden (4.9 percentage points), while the largest decrease was recorded in Latvia (1.7 percentage points).

Renewable energy sources used in transport include liquid biofuels (e.g. biodiesel meeting certain sustainability and GHG saving criteria), biomethane (i.e. gas of renewable origin) and the share of renewable electricity consumed mainly in road and rail transport.
