A total of USD 100,000 and EUR 61,500, equivalent to nearly BGN 300,000, was seized during customs inspections at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint, the Customs Agency announced in a press release on Wednesday.
On October 13, customs officers stopped a semi-trailer truck with a Turkish license plate. The driver, a Turkish national, presented documents indicating that the truck was transporting goods from the Netherlands through Bulgaria and Turkey to Iraq. However, during a thorough inspection of the cargo, customs officers discovered undeclared euro banknotes totaling EUR 61,500 (BGN 120,283) hidden beneath a cut plastic can containing a snow chain.
In a separate inspection on October 9, customs officers seized USD 100,000 from three Ukrainian women traveling in a van with a foreign license plate. USD 30,000 and USD 20,000 were found concealed in the underwear of two of the seven passengers. Another USD 50,000 in undeclared cash was discovered in the handbag of a third woman. The group was traveling from Ukraine through Bulgaria to Turkey.
