Illegal sewage discharge is polluting the Shokarov Canal drainage gorge in the Black Sea city of Varna, caretaker Environment Minister Petar Dimitrov said here Friday. He came to inspect the situation. 

Shokarov Canal is a system of drainage gorges that are supposed to take only rainwater and take it to the sea, said the Minister. He added that he had seen the data from the monitoring of water quality in the Shokarov Canal and most parameters show considerable exceedances.

The monitoring indicate that the exceedances are caused by gray and fecal water.

The Minister said that he had instructed the competent Basin Directorate and environmental authorities to check for illegal sewage outflows and take measures as necessary with the help of the municipal administration.

The fastest way to handle the situation is make sure the water from the Shokarov Canal goes into the sewerage system rather than flow into the sea, said the Mayor.
