Sofia Airport has received a Level 4 accreditation for carbon management and reduction, the airport concessionnaire SOF Connect said Thursday. It is the first Bulgarian airport with Airport Carbon Accredited Level IV – Transformation.

Only eight other airports in Europe, including Paris, Istanbul and Zurich, have this level of accreditation. It was determined by the ACI EUROPE association of European airports. "Sustainable development is the top priority for SOF Connect. This recognition affirms our dedication to the ESG strategy and reducing our carbon footprint, aiming for full carbon neutrality by 2036, " said Jesús Caballero Pinto, CEO of SOF Connect.

SOF Connect's strategic plan includes full decarbonization with 15% offsets by 2036. Also, the airport has purchased 34 electric vehicles and several hybrids, is participating in OMV's carbon offset program, and plans to build its own EV charging stations. Additionally, it is investing over BGN 14 million to digitalize airport processes, and building a 20 MW solar power plant by 2035, said SOF Connect.
