Twelfth-graders in Moldova studying Bulgarian language and literature sat a trial examination in this subject on Friday as part of their preparation for the state matriculation exam in June.

Maria Delibaltova, who has been seconded by the authorities in Bulgaria to the town of Comrat in Moldova, described it as "an important day" and "a serious challenge" for the students. Delibaltova wrote on her Facebook page: "We are particularly proud of the participation of the school leavers from the autonomous territorial unit of Gagauzia." A total of 41 students from 5 theoretical lyceums in the region sat the trial exam, she noted.

According to Delibaltova, the test was structured to assess critical thinking and language competence through 20 tasks, most of which require open answers. Ten of the tasks require text analysis – interpretation, characterization, argumentation, editing, she noted. The literature questions were related to the works of classic Bulgarian authors such as Ivan Vazov, Yordan Yovkov and Elin Pelin, and the final task involved writing an essay-style reflective text. The duration of the exam was three hours.

"All this is preparation for the decisive date, June 19, when a total of 150 students from [11 lyceums] across Moldova will sit the state matriculation examination in Bulgarian language and literature,” Delibaltova said.

She addressed the school leavers with an encouraging message: "Dear twelfth-graders, be confident in your knowledge, value the Bulgarian language and believe that your efforts will be rewarded!"
