National Social Security Institute operational data released on Thursday show that occupational accidents at the workplace increased by nearly 7% in the first nine months of 2023 compared to the same period of the previous year. In 2022, these accidents were 1,574, and a year later they reached 1,683. Against this background, there is a decrease in accidents when going to or returning from work. With 317 registered for the nine months of last year, this year they were 276 or 13% less. For the period in question, the total number of accepted occupational accidents increased by 68, from 1,891 in 2022 to 1,959 this year.

There was also a decrease in working days lost due to workplace injury - for the nine months of last year they were 120,658, while this year they were 115,008 or 5,650 (4.7%) less. There was also a decrease in the severity of occupational accidents and the associated recovery time, with the average number of calendar days lost per accident going down from 64 to 59.

For the nine months of 2023, the economic activities in which the most occupational accidents were registered were: wholesale trade, excluding trade in cars and motorcycles (153), land transport (139) and government (127). The number of working days lost was highest in land transport (9,966), government (7,503) and education (6,351).
