The Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River (EAEMDR) is procuring new hydrographic equipment in a bid to improve the navigation situation on the river, said EAEMDR Executive Director Ivelin Zanev.

The new equipment will consist of a multi-beam sounding system and a LiDAR laser scanner that will help the Agency experts in scanning the river bed and will provide 3D visualization. This will improve surveying and the prompt geodesic and hydrographic activity in the shared Bulgarian-Romanian sector of the River Danube. The hardware is intended to replace the obsolete equipment of Dunav 1, a hydrographic vessel that was built and acquired under an earlier, now completed project for an improvement of the Danube navigation systems and topo-hydrographic measurements.

The current project costs BGN 2 million-plus and is financed under Operational Programme Transport and Transport Infrastructure 2014-2020. Its implementation is due for completion by the end of 2023.
