The Plovdiv Regional Archaeological Museum will open the fourth edition of the Discoveries exhibition on May 17, the museum said on Friday.
The exhibition traditionally presents the most interesting results of the archaeological research conducted by the museum team during the past season. This year’s edition will have a special subtheme namely Archaeology and the Law, offering visitors the opportunity not only to see newly discovered artifacts, but also to peek into the regulated and responsible process behind every archaeological discovery. Attention is also paid to one of the biggest threats to cultural heritage, namely treasure hunting. Visitors will understand why the destruction of archaeological sites is not only illegal, but also irreparable.
Among the finds that will be presented to the public for the first time is the head of the city goddess of Philippopolis, discovered during rescue archaeological research in the Episcopal Basilica. It is a symbolic and literal face of the ancient city and one of the most impressive results of the 2024 archaeological season.
With this exhibition, the museum team aims to show that archaeology is a carefully regulated activity with clear rules, subject to control. Visitors will see not only the discoveries from the 2024 archaeological season, but also what it takes to make a discovery according to the rules.
