The expressive power of masquerade games will be presented in an exhibition of 40 photographs out of a total of 412 submissions for the Kukerlandia International Photo Competition, to be held within the eponymous masquerade festival in Yambol. The selected works were made by 32 photographers from Bulgaria and Turkiye, the organizers told BTA.

The winners of the photo competition will be announced at the opening of the exhibition on March 1 at the Georges Papazoff Art Gallery in Yambol. The shortlisted works can be seen at kukerlandia.com.

A jury comprised of two Bulgarian and three international photographers will name the winners a day before the exhibition opening. The jury is chaired by Borislav Milovanovic of Serbia, who has practiced photography for 40 years, has won more than 400 international awards and has been on the jury for more than 200 exhibitions. Milovanovic is Founder and President of the Danube International Photo Association, which is a partner of the Kukerlandia photo competition, said Bulgarian photographer Konstantin Zaikov.

During the masquerade festival in Yambol (February 27 – March 2), three members of the jury of the photo competition will present their art in a multimedia event and a discussion on contemporary trends in photography on February 28.

Throughout its 21-year history, the Kukerlandia International Photo Competition has built up the largest stock of images in Bulgaria which have captured the colourfulness of masquerade games. Some of them were displayed in the National Assembly in Sofia earlier this month.
