An exhibition highlighting the maiden and bride images in the art of the great Bulgarian painter Dechko Uzunov (1899-1986) will be held under the Heritage Programme of the Dechko Uzunov Art Gallery, a branch of the Sofia City Art Gallery (SCAG). It will open on February 21, in the month of the painter's birth, and will feature oil and watercolour paintings from the SCAG collection, the gallery said on Monday.
Curator Chavdar Popov said that in the late 1960s and the 1970s Uzunov was among a group of Bulgarian painters who developed the conceptual images of the woman (specifically the Bulgarian woman), the maiden and the bride. They explored the subjects' ethno-psychological features, the themes of maternity and fertility, and the resilience of national tradition by going beyond the narrative approach and distilling plastic representation formulas.
The exhibition is presented in a bilingual brochure, the SCAG said.
