The 2023 Rozhen National Folklore Fair opened in the western Rhodope range on Friday. President Rumen Radev attended the opening event. “Today we are here to draw from the spiritual strength of our ancestors who, in the most difficult times, did not stop dreaming and struggling to live together in a free, united, prosperous Bulgaria”, he addressed the event.
"Today we are here not only to be energized and emotionally charged by the free Rhodope song, not only to congratulate all the people from the Rhodopes who sacredly preserve their ancestral memory and for whom freedom is a state of mind. Once upon a time, here, at these picturesque meadows, is where divided Rhodope clans from both sides of the border held meetings" Radev said.
In his words, there are many places in Bulgaria where people from all corners gather every year, but no other event can take away the Rozhen’s leadership. "Thousands gather here again to experience the magic of our folklore," Radev added.
The Rozhen National Folklore Fair program began with a show by Kukeri dancers from Razlog (Southwestern Bulgaria), the Guinness world record-breaking Bagpipe Suite, among other folk song performances.
