Bulgarian children Sofia Anastasia Truncheva, 10, Kalina Mihaylova, 11, and Darina Ivanova, 6, won two gold prizes and a bronze prize at the 30th World Children's Picture Contest in Tokyo, Japan. A total of 9,310 children from 56 countries participated in the competition, the Bulgarians’ teacher, Tatyana Antonova, told BTA on Friday.

To participate in the competition, the children prepared and mailed their entries at the end of 2022. In the spring of 2023, they were told that their works had been awarded, and just a few days ago, they received their certificates, Antonova said, adding that the three children have already received an invitation for the next edition of the contest.

Antonova is the head of the Fairytale World art school for children in Sofia, training some 100 children.

"We have been winning awards in competitions all over the world for 20 years now" Antonova said. This is not the first time her students return with prizes from Japan. A few years back, her student Dimana Stoyanova won the top prize at the 19th Kanagawa Biennial World Children's Art Exhibition. "Her drawing was awarded among 26,471 other drawings by children from 95 countries around the world," the teacher recalled.
