Two Bulgarians have been detained in Liba, Czechia, and over a ton of precursors used to produce synthetic drugs has been seized following a tip-off about large-scale drug trafficking, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry’s General Directorate for Combating Organised Crime (GDCOC) said on Wednesday.

The detainees, a man and a woman in their 30s, are known to law enforcement for previously engaging in similar criminal activities.

The operation was launched after the GDCOC and the National Customs Agency alerted Czechia's drug enforcement authorities to a shipment of 250,000 pseudoephedrine tablets. The tablets had reportedly been diverted from a legitimate shipment and disguised as an intra-EU delivery from Bulgaria to Czechia, transported via a courier service. The tablets were intended for the production of methamphetamine.

Earlier in the day, the specialized inter-agency unit between the prosecution service and the Ministry of Interior said that 749 people were arrested in May in connection with the production, processing, acquisition, possession and distribution of narcotic substances. A total of 489 specialized police operations were carried out and 869 pre-trial proceedings were initiated.
