A warning message via the BG-Alert early warning system in connection with a feline predator has been sent in the Shumen region. “The procedure has been followed. This is done in implementation of a decision of the formed crisis headquarters. The text has been coordinated with the Regional Directorate for Fire Safety and Population Protection - Shumen,” Milka Pavlova, chief expert for public relations at the Shumen Regional Administration, told BTA.
The message says that a large predator was spotted in the area of Shumen Plateau. Access is restricted. Avoid the area. If anyone spots the animal, they should call 112, the alert says.
As BTA reported, access to the pedestrian areas of the Shumen Plateau is temporarily restricted due to a report of a rare animal species. Checkpoints restrict traffic at several approaches to the Shumen Plateau. An employee from the zoo in Varna will anaesthetize the predator in the Shumen Plateau Nature Park, the most important thing is to preserve people's health, said Chief Inspector Trifon Boychev.
On Thursday evening, shortly after 10 pm, a man who was walking in the nature park and spotted a large predator, went to the Shumen district headquarters. He presented a video in which he filmed the animal from afar. Immediately the competent institutions and colleagues from the General Directorate of National Police and Economic Police were notified, said Georgi Gendov, director of the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior in Shumen.
A check in the records of the Shumen Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water showed that there are no wild cats registered there, the Ministry of Environment and Water said on Friday. According to Article 21 of the Animal Protection Act, it is prohibited to import, acquire, sell, possess and keep specimens of the primate order and wild cats, except in zoos and rescue centres, experts at the ministry said.
